This elegant, classically hand-carved set of peacock-shaped bookends is made from walnut, a durable, sustainable wood that is native to Afghanistan, and hand-finished with a thin layer of protective oil. They are inspired by The Peacock House – a traditional building in the historic area of Kabul.

Elaborate wood carving has featured in public and private architecture in Afghanistan and its region for millennia. Classical carving, drawing on the geometric principles of Islamic design, could be found in Kabul mansions, as well as in mosques and mausoleums from Kandahar to Badghis. The peacock motif has been central to Persian iconography for centuries.
